Program details

Overview

Communications, Media and Studio Arts (500.AF) is a two-year pre-university Diploma of Collegial Studies at Vanier College, part of the Arts, Letters and Communication family, admitting students in both the autumn and winter semesters. The program applies art, media, and cultural theory across a range of practical disciplines, including photography, sculpture, painting, printmaking, video production, and theatre, balancing conceptual coursework with studio-based practice. Students have access to dedicated facilities described on the program page as fully equipped media labs, a makerspace studio, a cinema screening room, and fine arts studios, and are taught by faculty whose backgrounds span installation art, filmmaking, painting, and related disciplines. The breadth of disciplines lets students either sample widely across the arts or start specializing in a particular medium while still pre-university level. It suits creatively oriented students preparing for university study or careers in fine arts, graphic design, film, communications, or art education, giving them both a portfolio of practical work and a grounding in the theory that connects those fields.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Communications, Media and Studio Arts states no specific course, grade, portfolio or interview prerequisite beyond a Diploma of Secondary Studies (DES), Diploma of Vocational Education (DVS), or equivalent schooling completed outside Quebec, matching Vanier's college-wide baseline; admitted students are advised to consult an Academic Advisor on university-transfer prerequisites. No IELTS/TOEFL-style English score is required for admission: Vanier's admissions pages confirm English-proficiency testing is no longer an admission requirement, while a CEFR B2 French test (TCF, DELF, DALF or TEF) is required only of out-of-province or international applicants who did not complete Quebec secondary schooling.
