Program details

Overview

Languages and Cultures (500.AE) is a two-year pre-university Diploma of Collegial Studies at Vanier College within the Arts, Letters and Communication family, built around intensive study of two additional languages chosen from Spanish, Italian, German, Russian, or Mandarin, taught across six dedicated language courses. Alongside language acquisition, students study literature, culture, and film connected to those languages and take linguistics coursework, and in the third and fourth semesters they work through lab-based translation workshops covering both the theory and practice of translation. Admission is available in both the autumn and winter semesters. The combination of language immersion, cultural study, and translation training gives students a broader, more applied language education than language courses alone would provide. It suits students aiming at bilingual or multilingual competency for careers or further study in fields such as literature, translation, linguistics, education, political science, law, tourism, diplomacy, or international business, and the program page frames it as preparation for a wide range of university programs that value strong language and cross-cultural skills.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Languages and Cultures (500.AE) states no specific course or grade prerequisite beyond a Diploma of Secondary Studies (DES), Diploma of Vocational Education (DVS), or equivalent schooling completed outside Quebec, matching Vanier's college-wide baseline. No portfolio, interview or age condition is listed. No IELTS/TOEFL-style English score is required for admission: Vanier's admissions pages confirm English-proficiency testing is no longer an admission requirement, while a CEFR B2 French test (TCF, DELF, DALF or TEF) is required only of out-of-province or international applicants who did not complete Quebec secondary schooling.
