Program details

Overview

Environmental and Wildlife Management (145.C0) is a three-year career Diploma of Collegial Studies at Vanier College focused on the monitoring, conservation, and management of natural habitats, renewable resources, and wildlife populations. Coursework in the natural sciences is paired with hands-on laboratory work and extensive field experience, and the program page notes that most of the final year is spent at a Laurentian field station doing applied fieldwork rather than classroom study. An internship component gives students placements that can include international sites such as Costa Rica, Belize, and Namibia. The credential carries accreditation from the Canadian Environmental Accreditation Commission, and graduates can receive advanced-standing credit at universities across Quebec and Canada. Admission runs in the autumn and expects basic swimming ability along with wilderness first-aid certification, with prior small-boat handling or outdoor experience viewed favourably. The program suits students aiming at careers in forestry, fisheries, wildlife rehabilitation, ornithology, environmental consulting, education, or research who want a field-heavy, practice-based route into environmental science.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Academic prerequisites for Environmental and Wildlife Management (145.C0) are Mathematics TS/SN 506 (or cégep-equivalent 201-015-RE) and Chemistry 504 (or cégep-equivalent 202-001-RE), on top of Vanier's college-wide Quebec secondary-school baseline (DES/DVS with Secondary 5 language courses and Secondary 4 mathematics, science and history). The programme page adds a possible letter of intent, basic swimming skills assessed in the first semester, and wilderness first-aid certification to be completed by the second year; small-boat handling and outdoor experience are listed as assets, not requirements, and admission is Autumn only. No IELTS/TOEFL-style English score is required: Vanier's admissions pages state English-proficiency testing is no longer an admission requirement, and a French test (CEFR B2, via TCF, DELF, DALF or TEF) applies only to out-of-province/international applicants who did not attend Quebec secondary school.
