Overview
The Master of Studies in Law (MSL) at Western University is designed for professionals and academics from other disciplines whose research or professional interests touch on legal matters, giving them an academic grounding in law without preparing them for legal practice or entry into the legal profession. Students complete either a project-based or thesis-based program of study, taking graduate-level law courses alongside independent research supervised by faculty. The degree can be completed in three terms of full-time study or six terms of part-time study, allowing working professionals to pursue the credential alongside their careers. As part of admission, applicants submit a sample of academic writing, such as a research paper, thesis, or published journal article, and are generally required to have taken the GRE or an equivalent standardized test. Graduates gain a stronger legal foundation for research, policy, and professional work in fields that intersect with law.
