This programme develops in-depth knowledge of the physical technologies used to produce and study materials, covering micro- and nanotechnologies and the selection of materials or production methods to solve engineering problems. Subjects span classical, relativistic and quantum mechanics together with electromagnetism, statistical physics, thermodynamics, optics and the physics of solids, applied to the properties, formation methods and development trends of engineering materials. Students learn to use modern physical and chemical analysis techniques, model and predict material properties numerically, and design new materials and structures that meet technical, economic and environmental requirements. Practical training includes laboratory research with specialised equipment, planning and running experiments, and interpreting results to prepare conclusions and recommendations. Graduates are prepared to assess the business and project-management aspects of materials technology work, recognising the links between technological choices and their economic and social consequences, and to work independently or in interdisciplinary teams.
