BA/BS in Object Conservation and Restoration

General Description: Objective(s) of a study programme: The aim of the study programme Objects Conservation and Restoration - is to train specialists in restoration of objects, who are able to conserve and restore by selecting and directly applying various measures that ensure the preservation of objects and its accessibility to present and future generations; and perform all actions aimed at facilitating the comprehension of objects, their acknowledgement and usage by preserving authentic materials. Learning outcomes: 1. Knowledge of the national and international heritage protection legislation and being able to apply it in the process of conservation and restoration of cultural valuables. 2. Ability to define the material, technique and state of movable cultural valuables using necessary physical, biological and chemical tests. 3. Being able to prepare relevant information to assess the authenticity as well as the historical, artistic, scientific value of the movable cultural valuables to be restored. 4. Being able to assess the environment for the storage and display of movable cultural valuables and develop a maintenance plan. 5. Being able to prepare movable cultural valuables for transportation, display and prepare documents for archiving. 6. Being able to develop a programme for the conservation of movable cultural valuables. 7. Being able disinfect / disinsect movable cultural valuables. 8. Being able to consolidate the material structure and/or design of the cultural valuables to be conserved. 9. Being able to perform the cleaning of the cultural valuables conserved. 10. Being able to stabilize the material decomposition processes of the cultural valuables conserved. 11. Being able to develop a programme of the restoration of movable cultural valuables. 12. Being able to remove the consequences of previous low-quality restoration and unjustified changes made to the cultural valuables restored. 13. Being able to reconstruct the fragments of the cultural valuables that were destroyed. 14. Being able to prepare the description of the state of movable cultural valuables and illustrative materials. 15. Being able to prepare the documentation for the conservation and restoration of movable cultural valuables. 16. Ability to communicate in foreign and Lithuanian professional language. 17. Being able to visualise and present the results of personal performance using information technologies. 18. Mastery of the principles of management; ability to make decisions and plan personal performance; knowledge of the requirements of human safety and being able to apply them in professional activities. 19. Perception of the importance of continuous personal development and being able to independently and methodically improve cognitive competencies Activities of teaching and learning: Lectures, presentations, discussions, seminars, demonstrations, practical assignments, group work, literature study, project preparation, etc. Methods of assessment of learning achievements: Learning achievements are assessed using accumulative assessment system. Knowledge and skills are assessed by ten grades scale. The final score may consist of several components, collected in the study process (interim reports, self-study papers, examination or project). Study subject teacher determines accumulative assessment of the subject components and their values of the coefficients depending on the complexity of the subject. Study subject teacher determines and informs the students at the beginning of the term about the impact (percent) of each component (task, work) for final assessment and formulates assessment criteria for each intermediate assignment. Framework: Study subjects (modules), practical training: Volume of general subjects of collegial studies consists of 15 credits: Foreign Language 1 (English) Level I / Foreign Language 1 (English) Level II, Foreign Language 2 (English) Level I / Foreign Language 2 (English) Level II, Philosophy, Oral and Written Communication, Creativity and Entrepreneurship. Volume of subjects of the basic study field consists of 135 credits: Applied Computer Software, Photo Documentation, Painting 1, Heritage Protection, Basics of Conservation and Restoration, Basics of Mastery, Ethnoculture and Lithuania Art History, Conservation and Restoration Works, Drawing 1, Painting 2, Material Science, Basics of Composition, General and Applied Art History, Drawing 2, Materials Science, Restoration of Upholstered Furniture 1, Technologies of Painting Restoration, Painting 3, Basics of Restoration Chemistry, Restoration of Upholstered Furniture 2, Conservation and Restoration of Contemporary Painting, Basics of Gilding Restoration, Basics of Applied Research, Preventive Conservation, Designing Drawings of Objects, Basics of Restoration Documentation, Human Safety, History of Interior Design. volume of professional practices consists of 30 credits (Skills Development and Orentation Internship, Conservation Work Internship, Restoration Work Internship, Technological Internship, Final Internship) and the Professional Bachelor Thesis consists of 15 credits Specialisations: Volume of specialisation subjects consists of 21 credits Furniture Conservation and Restoration. The following subjects are studied: Conservation and Restoration of Wooden Etnographic Items, Conservation and Restoration of Wooden Polychromic Items, Conservation and Restoration of Classic Furniture. Restoration of Easel Paintings: Conservation and Restoration of Easel Paintings, Copying of Historical Paintings: Painting Techniques and Technologies,Conservation and Restoration of Classical Painting. Optional courses: Knowledge can be deepened by choosing subjects from the general list of elective courses available in the Study Management System (SMS). The subjects chosen by the student amount to 9 credits. Students have the right to choose from the entire list of elective courses offered by Kauno kolegija. Distinctive features of a study programme: The study programme is unique and helps to preserve endangered cultural heritage objects and to improve the image of the state in the context of European Union. Art restorers are trained only at Academy of Arts of Kauno kolegija Higher Education Institution. Access to professional activity or further study: Access to professional activity: After completing the study programme of Objects Conservation and Restoration, a graduate will be able to work in state and private museums, libraries, archives, to establish private business, to perform preservation and restoration of art works, work on a freelance basis or perform as an independent artist. Access to further study: After completion of this study programme, further studies can be continued in any Lithuanian or European higher education institution with academic credits transfer.
