This programme trains Masters of Life Sciences in sports physiology, building the ability to independently plan and carry out research into physical fitness and the body's physiological responses under normal conditions and under physical load. Coursework addresses the molecular biology and genetics behind the body's adaptation to exercise, aerobic and anaerobic energy metabolism, and the biomechanical properties of muscles and tendons, alongside laboratory techniques such as Western blot and qPCR testing, genetic and genotyping analysis, gas-exchange based capacity testing, isokinetic dynamometry, electromyography and electroencephalography. Further topics cover thermoregulation, sleep restriction, nutritional factors affecting health and performance, and the causes of fatigue and recovery after exertion, taught through interactive and problem-based lectures, literature analysis, case studies and group discussion. Graduates are expected to select appropriate statistical methods for biomedical data and design physiological testing programmes independently.
