The Bioinformatics Master's programme at Vilnius University is given in English by the Life Sciences Center, working with the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics. This entry is the Computer Science track of a new study programme designed to bring together computing and biology.
Students learn to process biological data with computational techniques, write software tools and address complex biological problems using machine learning and artificial intelligence. The first semester lets them strengthen either their biology or their computer science background, depending on previous studies. The second semester brings machine learning, the analysis of omics data and a project hosted by a research team or firm. The third semester brings phylogenetics, structural bioinformatics and a second project, while the fourth is used to prepare and defend the thesis.
Electives, numbering over 30, come from the Life Sciences Center and several faculties.
Admission Requirements: Undergraduate diploma or higher; for non-EU/EFTA applicants no more than five years may have passed since the Bachelor degree was completed. A Bachelor or equivalent degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, computer science, bioinformatics, biology, cell biology, genetics, biotechnology, data science or mathematics. The Bachelor's thesis must have involved experimental research in bioinformatics or related sciences. An overall grade average of at least 70% is required. Eligible applicants are invited to an entrance examination in biochemistry.
