Boston University's Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering offers two bachelor's degrees, and this is the one centered on computing machinery. It treats computers as systems, from standalone devices to many linked together, and notes their growing presence in telephones, factories, cars, transportation and medical equipment.
The first years lay groundwork in the physical sciences, math and computer science. Later courses cover digital logic, how computers are organized, operating systems, software and algorithm design, while technical electives open subfields including VLSI, networks and software.
Senior year brings a full-year capstone shared with electrical engineers. Teams act like a small company, taking a product from concept through development, testing and construction while managing a budget and presenting their work. ABET's Engineering Accreditation Commission has accredited the program.
