In the Master’s Programme in Theatre Pedagogy, art pedagogy is seen as a form of artistic activity where pedagogical questions are ever-present. In the context of art pedagogy, art, performance and teaching are viewed as encounters where aesthetic, ethical and political phenomena are intertwined.The programme consists of advanced studies in the arts, studies in the theory and practices of art pedagogy, research studies, teaching practices, international interaction and elective studies that support the development of the student’s identity as an art pedagogue.The students are encouraged to take risks, make bold choices and to seek new solutions within the framework of the programme’s curriculum. Praxis – Curating and Writing in Contemporary Art (Master of Arts) -programme develops students' ability to think and act in the field of exhibiting and mediating contemporary art. The goal is to understand the art world in relation to the surrounding society and the range of active roles within it. The students in the Praxis programme study alongside the fine art students. The programme trains contemporary art mediators, whose multidisciplinary activities and thinking are brought together in the public presentation of art. The aim of the programme is to educate responsible, critical, and creative art professionals.Praxis studies consist of the history, theory and contemporary discourse of contemporary art, curating and critical writing, as well as hands-on experience in exhibition and mediating practices. During their studies, students work with art students and artists in a variety of spaces, locations, and contexts, including exhibition venues, public spaces, publications, and digital environments. Studies emphasise the various cognitive, social and societal links of exhibiting, mediating and experiencing art.The emphasis in the teaching is on small-group teaching. Teaching in the programme strives to reflect changes in contemporary art and society. The teachers of the programme are established researchers, curators, writers and artists actively working in the field of contemporary art. Visiting teachers provide teaching in the programme also, and act as supervisors and examiners of students’ theses. The thesis project for students with a research orientation is a Master’s thesis, while other studies provide the necessary skills and capabilities for conducting research and drafting an extensive written thesis project. On the basis of various folk music themes, research can also be linked to, for example, societal phenomena or other art forms.Studies may include music history, philosophy and familiarisation with different research methods. The LAPS programme provides an interdisciplinary approach to performance art / live art and performance studies, which is reflected in the diverse fields of our lecturers, mentors, visiting artists and theorists. LAPS is partly constructed around rotating 1-to-1 mentorships, and includes group seminars in areas of core knowledge, art criticism, actionism and live art.LAPS combines critical thinking with practice-led research, and seeks to flesh out synergies between research and practice. Once graduated one is able to work independently in diverse professional tasks in recording arts and music production. Students have the possibility to study both popular and classical music production.The curriculum consists of popular and classical music recording, editing, and mixing techniques, production skills, and live sound reinforcement, in awareness of eco-social transition that our society is undergoing. The degree programme in Fine Arts encourages you to find your strengths and your individual means of expression and interestswithin art. Your growth as an artist is supported by personal supervision and the communal discussion culture within the Academy, and during your studies you will learn the skills that are necessary for working independently in the field of visual arts. You will also learn to understand your diverse roles in the context of contemporary art and society.In the 5.5 years of study, you will first complete a bachelor’s degree and then a master’s degree. First-year students begin their studies with a course called An introduction to independent artistic work and the subject areas, after which they choose their subject area. The Academy offers teaching in four subject areas: sculpture, painting, printmaking and time and space arts. The Time and Space Arts subject area has three specialisations: moving image, photography, or site and situation specific art.Artistic work and related theory comprise the core of the studies. In addition to coursework in fine arts, students take courses in exhibition studies, art history, art theory, philosophy, and languages. The degree programme in Fine Arts draws together students with varying linguistic backgrounds, and the instruction at the Academy is organised so that everyone can take part in the same courses. You will become part of a unique community. The degree will give you the artistic competence to perform on stage and a broad understanding of music. As an opera student, you will be part of a tight-knit ensemble of 8 to 12 singers. During your studies, you will participate in four full-scale opera productions featuring an orchestra. You will also take part in one opera production that is performed together with pianists. The operas are performed in their original language. Additionally, you will participate in small-scale operas or opera scenes during your studies.The programme consists of ten 6–8-week teaching modules, which are planned and scheduled in advance. Comparative Dramaturgy and Performance Research (CDPR) is a two-year, full-time international double-degree Master’s programme. As part of your professional skill set you will also learn the administrative tasks of a conductor.Wind Orchestra ConductingYou have the opportunity to choose between studying general wind orchestra conducting or specialising in military orchestra conducting. In your studies, you will become acquainted with the conducting techniques required for more demanding pieces in the wind orchestra repertoire, the extensive repertoire that exists for wind orchestras as well as its different styles, special features and interpretations. You will regularly get the opportunity to work with varying band compositions. Your weekly tool is the 12-17-member trainee wind band. Your class will also serve as visiting conductors for the Finnish Military Bands around Finland.Choral ConductingWith choral conducting as your major, you will work with the Sibelius Academy’s 16-member vocal ensemble (“Vokis”) in your practice and degree concerts. You will perform with Vokis 3 to 4 times a year.
