The part-time Healthcare Unit Clerk Associate Certificate prepares you for roles in healthcare administration as a Healthcare Unit Clerk in hospitals and healthcare facilities. The program features an 80-hour practicum, offering real-world experience in transcribing orders, managing medical records, handling billing, and scheduling appointments.Healthcare Unit Clerks combine healthcare with administrative duties in hospitals and healthcare facilities, and form part of a healthcare team. They act as a vital communications hub that focuses on clerical tasks. Common duties of Healthcare Unit Clerks include:
- transcribing and processing physicians’ orders
- maintaining electronic medical records
- following medical billing practices
- scheduling appointments
Healthcare Unit Clerks use business information systems software and have strong client-service abilities, as well as excellent organizational and communication skills.
The courses are offered through Flexible Learning starting three times a year in January, April and September.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The Healthcare Unit Clerk Associate Certificate requires Category 2 English language proficiency — English Studies 12 at 67% or equivalent — which BCIT's general proficiency page equates to IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 5.5, TOEFL iBT 86, PTE Academic 60, or Duolingo 120. Upon conditional acceptance, applicants must submit a Criminal Record Check with vulnerable-sector screening and up-to-date immunization records. A minimum keyboard speed of 35 words per minute is recommended, rising to 55 wpm for some positions, and EAL students are advised to take COMM 1106 – Introduction to Business and Technical Communication (with the Language Development Component). Practicum courses carry their own prerequisites: 65% each in CLRK 1000, CLRK 2000, CLRK 1005, CLRK 1010, OFFC 1001, OFFC 1055 and OFFC 2001, together with a valid Criminal Record Check and immunization records. The program does not qualify holders of a study permit and is not eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit.

Openings are 9:00 am and deadlines 11:59 pm Pacific Time, moving to the next business day on a weekend. Admission is not institute-wide rolling, but many programs work first-qualified-first-accepted and can fill before the posted deadline, and several programs, mostly in Health Sciences, trades and graduate studies, run entirely separate application tables of their own. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
