Ecological Restoration: Master of Science (MSc)

BCIT's Master of Science in Ecological Restoration is a graduate program combining classroom instruction with extensive field-based training, typically completed in two years full-time with a maximum of seven years allowed. Students choose between two structures: a course-based option (31 credits) made up of six core courses, three elective courses, and an applied ecological restoration project, or a thesis-based option (30 credits) with the same six core courses plus a supervised research thesis requiring at least 52 weeks of work. Core courses cover restoration ecology, monitoring design, research methods, project management, Indigenous and social perspectives on restoration, and ecosystem-specific practice, with students able to focus on terrestrial or aquatic restoration. The program includes mandatory field trips and week-long field sessions around British Columbia. Admission requires a bachelor's degree with a minimum 2.8 GPA (3.0 over the final 60 credits), introductory coursework in ecology and statistics, two upper-level ecology or environmental courses, and English proficiency equivalent to English Studies 12 at 67 percent; applications are assessed on GPA, coursework, and references. It suits people pursuing careers in ecosystem restoration with environmental consultancies, government agencies, or conservation organizations, and the full-time option is eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit.
