Overview
This Bachelor of Social Work approaches practice through anti-oppressive, Indigenous, structural, and feminist lenses, emphasizing peace-building, community engagement, and social justice alongside more conventional social work skills. The four-year undergraduate program addresses systems of oppression such as racism, colonialism, sexism, and poverty, and draws on interdisciplinary coursework spanning psychology, peace studies, ecology, religion, and Indigenous studies. In their third and fourth years, students complete two field placements totalling more than 700 hours: an initial placement focused on community-building and social-justice work, and a second placement centred on direct support skills such as case management and counselling, supported throughout by a field seminar for reflection and integrating theory with practice. Course delivery combines in-person and online formats - the introductory course, for example, runs in person in the fall term and online in winter - based at the Winnipeg campus. The program holds Pre-Accreditation status with the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE). It suits students drawn to community-based, justice-oriented practice, decolonizing and Indigenous-led approaches, or the integration of faith and spirituality into social work, and who want a program combining substantial supervised field experience with an explicitly anti-oppressive theoretical framework.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: CMU's Bachelor of Social Work sets its own entrance criteria beyond the university's general admission requirements. Applicants must complete 27 university-level credit hours with a minimum C+ average and no grade below C, including SWRK-1000 at a minimum C+ (internal applicants; external candidates complete it by the end of their first semester), PSYC-1010, PSYC-1020, and either INDS-1050 or HIST-2040. A 500-750-word reflection essay on social justice, oppression and motivation for the profession, two references (one academic, one professional; a former youth-in-care applicant may substitute a support worker, community leader or elder), and a shortlisted interview are required, with completed applications due April 30. Where English is not the applicant's first language, CMU applies its institution-wide tests: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall/6.0 per band, TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall/4.0 per section as published by CMU, PTE 58, CAEL 60, or MELAB 80%.
