Disability and Chronic Illness is a concentration within Carleton University's Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc), introducing the biomedical, social and psychological basis of chronic illnesses and disabilities such as heart disease, cancer, chronic pain, mental health conditions and physical disabilities, and exploring treatment and accommodation strategies. Coursework covers biomedical, cognitive and technological advances in treatment, the ethical dilemmas affecting intervention, and strategies for enabling productive and healthy lives, drawing on molecular biology, anatomy, public health policy and epidemiology. Students may complete a paid summer research internship or take part in research within the curriculum, and a Capstone project provides practical experience through research field placements. Graduates are prepared for health-related careers and further study, including roles such as clinical research coordinator, community health worker, health program evaluator, health researcher or policy analyst, and research technician, with pathways toward dentistry, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy and physiotherapy.
