Indigenous Studies is a Bachelor of Arts offered by Carleton University that centres Indigenous worldviews in research, teaching and mentoring, with courses taught in part by elders, knowledge keepers and community members. Students examine Indigenous resurgence and ways of knowing, community-engaged learning, and the dissection of colonial power and politics. Coursework covers Indigenous feminisms, genders and sexualities, ecological ways of knowing, Indigenous urbanisms, Indigenous legal orders, historical and contemporary Indigenous political struggles, Indigenous arts and culture, Indigenous languages and their relationships to the land, and global Indigeneity. Introductory and upper-year courses include an introduction to Indigenous studies and a course on Indigenous cosmologies. A practicum option lets students apply programme knowledge with a local organization. Carleton's Ottawa location is presented as a source of stimulus and support for the programme. Graduates are prepared for roles in advocacy, the community sector, creative industries, journalism, law, museum and archival work, public service, and teaching.
