The Bachelor of Journalism and Humanities is offered jointly by Carleton's Great Books Program in the College of the Humanities and the School of Journalism and Communication. Approximately 40 per cent of the programme is core journalism coursework, including professional training in writing and reporting, professional ethics and media law, and skills for newspaper, radio, television and new media journalism. The remaining 60 per cent covers the humanities, including art history, classics, literature, philosophy, political science and religion. The programme includes professional apprenticeships for practical application of journalism skills. Sample courses include Foundations: Journalism in Context and Rethinking Modern Canadian History. Graduates are prepared for a wide range of careers, including advertising, broadcasting, communications, diplomacy, journalism, media, news, policy analysis, teaching and writing.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the Bachelor of Journalism and Humanities (Honours) requires the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent with six Grade 12 U or M courses, one of which must be 4U English. Students who already hold an undergraduate degree are not eligible to apply to this Honours program. Transfer into second year is possible where the school maintains places for students transferring from Carleton or elsewhere; offers are normally made to applicants with an overall CGPA equivalent to 9.00 (B+) or higher and a Core Humanities CGPA of at least 6.00, and an additional year may be required to complete degree requirements. Transfers into higher years are not considered. The overall admission average required for direct entry is determined each year on a program-by-program basis, and meeting the stated minimum establishes eligibility for consideration only; because enrolment is limited, the effective cut-off is typically higher.
