This program leads to a Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology at Carleton University. It is thesis-based, structured around the field of engaged anthropology, which combines ethnographic and theoretical analysis of the cultural frameworks and social fields that shape interactions among humans and between humans and the environment. Research areas include symbolism and culture, global development and underdevelopment, indigeneity, medical anthropology, and environment, and a collaborative Specialization in Political Economy and African Studies is available. Students may complete a placement, worth 0.5 course credit, with a governmental or non-governmental institution based in Ottawa, linking practical work outside the department to their thesis research; the city's library, archival and museum collections also support research into material culture, art, ethnohistory and historical texts. The program normally takes four years to complete on a full-time basis, with admission for the Fall term.
