Overview

The Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology focuses substantively on the organization and development of contemporary societies, studied both in comparative context and with particular reference to Canadian society. Doctoral candidates complete advanced coursework in sociological theory and research methods before undertaking original, independent research culminating in a dissertation under faculty supervision. The program prepares candidates for careers in academic research and teaching, developing advanced skills in sociological analysis and empirical research design. Candidates are guided by a faculty supervisor and a supervisory committee that oversees progress from coursework through candidacy requirements to the completed dissertation. The program normally takes four years of full-time study to complete, with admission offered for the Fall term. Graduates pursue careers in academia, research institutions and policy-oriented organizations requiring advanced expertise in sociological theory and analysis.

Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold a master's degree in a relevant field. Carleton's minimum graduate admission standard for doctoral programs is a graduate average of B+ or better in coursework, including the thesis, with no grade below B-.
