The Master of Arts in Legal Studies at Carleton University is an interdisciplinary program organized around the theme of law and social transformation. Students develop a rigorous, critical understanding of how law works, the ways individuals encounter and challenge law, how regulation changes over time, and the relationship between law, nation, citizenship, and belonging. The program is offered through the Department of Law and Legal Studies, with students participating in research and seminar series including the Jurisprudence Center and the Graduate Culture Seminar. Fields of specialization include citizenship, human rights and political economy; conflict resolution; gender, sexuality and identity; crime, governance and security; globalization, international law and transnational justice; and law, history, culture and humanities. Students choose from coursework, research essay, or thesis pathways over a nominal two years of full-time study, delivered in person with a Fall intake, based in Ottawa near Parliament, the Supreme Court of Canada, and federal government departments.
