Overview

The Master of Social Work is an accredited graduate program preparing students for professional and leadership roles in social work, with a focus on critical thinking about structural barriers to wellbeing and on values of respect and the dignity of all people. The degree is offered through a One Year Program for applicants who hold a Bachelor of Social Work and a Two Year Program for applicants with another honours degree, both including practicum placements as experiential learning. Based in Ottawa, students have access to federal government departments, national and international associations, research institutes, and non-governmental organizations working on social policy, along with related archival and library resources. Admission is in the Fall term. Graduates go on to work as social workers in government departments and community organizations in Ottawa and elsewhere.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants who hold a Bachelor of Social Work are eligible for the one-year program; applicants with an honours degree in another discipline complete the two-year program. Admission requires a four-year (honours) bachelor's degree, with a minimum B+ average in the major subject area and a B- average or better overall, per Carleton University's general graduate admission requirements.
