Program details

Overview

Musique is a two-year pre-university program (501.A0) at Cégep de Saint-Laurent leading to a Diploma of College Studies (DEC), with fall admission. Enrollment is quota-limited and varies by instrument; candidates are selected on academic record and audition results, and passing the audition is a prerequisite. The program combines individual instrumental lessons with group classes, pairing hands-on practice with music theory across more than thirty instruments in classical, jazz, and popular styles. Students choose among profiles: classical interpretation, emphasizing solo and large-ensemble performance; jazz/pop interpretation, emphasizing improvisation; and a creation-and-composition profile built around digital tools and sound design, whose first-year courses are shared with the technical program's Creation, Music and Technology profile. Beyond coursework, students can take part in community performances, international artistic residencies, and creative projects, and may pair Musique with another pre-university discipline through a double-DEC combination. The program suits students who already play an instrument at an advanced level and want personalized, discipline-specific training alongside a general pre-university education, typically as preparation for further studies in music or a related field at university.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: This two-year Préuniversitaire Musique program generally receives more applications than it has places available; selection is based on school-record quality and audition results, and the level of competition varies by instrument. Its own stated prerequisite is passing the audition; beyond that it runs on Cégep de Saint-Laurent's general conditions applied for through SRAM: a DES; a DEP plus 5th-secondary language of instruction, 5th-secondary second language and 4th-secondary mathematics; or judged-equivalent training. Across every program at the Cégep, school-record quality is the main selection criterion: for secondary-school applicants that means 4th- and 5th-secondary results as they stand when they apply, and college-level results count too for anyone who has already attended a cégep.
