Program details
Overview
Litterature is a two-year pre-university DEC built around close reading and writing across classic and modern works from many literary traditions, including French, Quebec, Russian, German, American and British literature. The program combines genre-focused courses on poetry, the essay, theatre and narrative, courses tracing artistic movements across periods and disciplines such as painting, sculpture, music and architecture, and seminars devoted to a specific theme or author, with examples on the page including imagination and altered states, madness, animality, the feminine, and single-author studies of Kafka, Rejean Ducharme or Virginia Woolf. Alongside literary analysis, students regularly write essays, reflective pieces and creative texts, developing their own voice and style. Each year, graduating students' creative writing is published in the program's student literary review, Textures. The program can also be combined as a double DEC with Sciences humaines, Sciences de la nature or Musique. No specific secondary-level prerequisites are required, and admission is offered each Fall. It suits students drawn to sustained reading, literary analysis and creative and critical writing across historical periods and cultures.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This two-year Préuniversitaire Arts, lettres et communication option (Littérature) is non-quota: applications that meet its conditions are generally admitted. It states no course prerequisite of its own beyond Cégep de Saint-Laurent's general conditions applied for through SRAM: a DES; a DEP plus 5th-secondary language of instruction, 5th-secondary second language and 4th-secondary mathematics; or judged-equivalent training. The Cégep states that it weighs French-language mastery in admission decisions generally, and particularly for the Arts, lettres et communication programs. Across every program at the Cégep, school-record quality is the main selection criterion: for secondary-school applicants that means 4th- and 5th-secondary results as they stand when they apply, and college-level results count too for anyone who has already attended a cégep.
