Overview
Danse is a two-year pre-university program (506.A0) at Cégep de Saint-Laurent leading to a DEC, with fall admission and no enrollment quota; applicants who meet the admission conditions are generally accepted, though passing an audition is a prerequisite. Instruction covers contemporary dance, including the Limon and Graham techniques, alongside classical ballet based on the Cecchetti method. The course load is organized around technical training in ballet and modern dance, movement-exploration classes such as rhythm, acrobatics, improvisation, and composition, and courses dedicated to choreographic projects that culminate in public performances, including guided-choreography interpretation and individual and collective creation. Theoretical courses cover movement analysis from an anatomical perspective and the history of dance and choreographic works. Students have access to a dedicated training lab, peer tutoring, and thematic workshops, and take part in institutional arts events and end-of-session performances. Danse can also be combined with another pre-university program, such as human sciences or natural sciences, through a double-DEC. The program suits students building technical dance skills who also want to develop a creative and reflective approach to the art form, typically before pursuing further studies in dance or a related field.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This two-year Préuniversitaire Danse program is non-quota: applications that meet its conditions are generally admitted. Its own stated prerequisite is passing the audition; beyond that it runs on Cégep de Saint-Laurent's general conditions applied for through SRAM: a DES; a DEP plus 5th-secondary language of instruction, 5th-secondary second language and 4th-secondary mathematics; or judged-equivalent training. Across every program at the Cégep, school-record quality is the main selection criterion: for secondary-school applicants that means 4th- and 5th-secondary results as they stand when they apply, and college-level results count too for anyone who has already attended a cégep.
