Program details

Overview

Langues is a two-year pre-university DEC that develops fluency in French and English alongside two additional languages, German plus, depending on placement, Spanish or Arabic, together with a broad view of the four associated cultures. Students take four German-language courses plus a course on German-speaking cultures, an English course on anglophone culture and civilization in addition to the general English requirements, and roughly five courses split between Spanish and Arabic depending on their starting level, with students who already have stronger Spanish moving into Arabic study alongside advanced Spanish. Beyond coursework, the program includes cultural activities such as German cooking workshops, Arabic calligraphy practice, Scottish dance and flamenco, and an annual two-week linguistic and cultural exchange trip to Germany organized with a partner school. The program can also be combined as a double DEC with Sciences humaines. Admission requires placing at an intermediate English level and is offered each Fall. It suits students drawn to language learning and cross-cultural exploration who want a broad, multilingual foundation before continuing to university.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: This two-year Préuniversitaire Arts, lettres et communication option (Langues) is non-quota: applications that meet its conditions are generally admitted. Its own stated prerequisite is to place at the intermediate level in English, assessed at admission rather than by an external test score; beyond that it runs on Cégep de Saint-Laurent's general conditions applied for through SRAM: a DES; a DEP plus 5th-secondary language of instruction, 5th-secondary second language and 4th-secondary mathematics; or judged-equivalent training. The Cégep states that it weighs French-language mastery in admission decisions generally, and particularly for the Arts, lettres et communication programs.
