Program details

Overview

Cinema et communication is a two-year pre-university DEC that develops both practical filmmaking skills and a broader understanding of film and communication theory. Coursework is organized into four strands: film theory, exploring cinematic language and codes and situating different practices within film history; media and communication, examining how the media landscape works, including documentary form; general culture, a course in artistic and literary movements that situates cinema alongside the other arts; and film practice, where students make their own short films and creative projects starting in their first session. Students have opportunities to screen their films at festivals and attend industry outings such as Regard sur le court-metrage, the Festival du nouveau cinema and the Rendez-vous du cinema quebecois, and to attend talks with professionals from Quebec's film and communications industries. Practical courses are held in a dedicated pavilion that once housed the National Film Board of Canada, equipped with a green-screen studio, multiple editing suites and film-equipment loan services. No specific secondary-level prerequisites are required for admission, which is offered each Fall.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: This two-year Préuniversitaire Arts, lettres et communication option (Cinéma) may receive more applications than it has seats; when that happens, selection is based on school-record quality. It states no course prerequisite of its own beyond Cégep de Saint-Laurent's general conditions applied for through SRAM: a DES; a DEP plus 5th-secondary language of instruction, 5th-secondary second language and 4th-secondary mathematics; or judged-equivalent training. The Cégep states that it weighs French-language mastery in admission decisions generally, and particularly for the Arts, lettres et communication programs.
