Overview
Nursing for Licensed Practical Nurses is a three-year technical Diploma of Collegial Studies (DEC), program code 180.B0, offered under a DEC-BAC pathway at Cegep de Sept-Iles for students who already hold a Diplome d'etudes professionnelles (DEP) in health, assistance and nursing care. The program builds a holistic, patient-centred approach to care that respects patients' rights, beliefs, values and abilities, and develops clinical judgment, autonomy, professional accountability and critical thinking. Students learn to provide care across age groups, promote health and prevent or treat illness, assess patients' health needs, plan and organize interventions, and apply measures for continuity of care in areas including medicine, surgery, pediatrics, maternity, care of older adults, palliative care, and psychiatry and mental health. Because it builds on prior DEP training, some professional-training courses are recognized and the schedule is adapted accordingly. A DEC-BAC agreement with the Universite du Quebec a Chicoutimi allows graduates to continue directly into a bachelor's degree in nursing science.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants need a Diplome d'etudes professionnelles (DEP) in Sante, assistance et soins infirmiers (health, assistance and nursing care), plus a passing grade in Secondary 4 Environmental Science and Technology (or Science and the Environment) and Secondary 5 Chemistry; applicants who have not completed the Secondary 5 Chemistry requirement remain eligible and are offered preparatory chemistry training by the college.
