Collegiate teaching began there in September 1971 as Campus Mingan, part of the multi-campus College regional de la Cote-Nord administered from Baie-Comeau. Because the region had no classical college, technical school, or teacher-training institution of its own, the Quebec government approved a fully autonomous institution in February 1980, and the College d'enseignement general et professionnel de Sept-Iles formally took over operations on July 1, 1980.
The college now offers two-year pre-university DEC programs that prepare students for university study in the natural and human sciences, computing, and visual arts, alongside three-year technical DEC programs built around the Cote-Nord's labour market: nursing, early childhood education, business administration, computer technology, electrical engineering technology, industrial maintenance, and mineral technology tied to the region's mining sector.
