Overview
This Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design, offered through Concordia's Department of Design and Computation Arts on the Sir George Williams campus, develops critical thinking about the social, cultural, political, economic, and environmental impact of design decisions alongside hands-on technical training, including the use of metal and wood shops for 3D prototyping and specialty equipment for bookbinding and video editing. The primary option is a 66-credit Major in Design, and full-time study takes three to four years (90-120 credits), with admission in the Fall term only. Students can pursue professional internships in design-related industries and cultural institutions, including a Career Edge option offering one full-time paid internship alongside academic work, and independent study or international exchange through the International Student Exchange Program are also available to advanced students. The program suits aspiring artists and designers interested in visual communication and the built environment, preparing graduates for roles such as creative director or founder of their own design studio across graphic, industrial, or multimedia design.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Quebec CEGEP applicants need a DEC; Ontario and other Canadian high-school applicants need a C+ overall average; IB Diploma applicants need 26 points overall; university transfer applicants need a C average. Beyond the academic minimum, applicants must submit a letter of intent and a portfolio directly to the department, per the design program's own how-to-apply page. Concordia's institution-wide English proficiency minimum applies unless exempt: IELTS Academic 6.0 with no band below 5.5, TOEFL iBT 70, or Duolingo 105. The program admits for Fall only; applications are due March 1, with U.S. and international applicants advised to apply by February 1 given immigration-processing timelines, and meeting the minimum average does not guarantee admission.
Application Details
Start Date:September
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants, including Quebec CEGEP graduates, apply directly to Concordia: for Fall 2027 entry (September start) the application deadline is 1 March 2027, and for Winter 2027 entry (January start) it is 1 November 2026; not all programs admit in Winter. Concordia sets the same formal deadlines for U.S. and international applicants but strongly recommends applying earlier - by 1 February 2027 for Fall or 1 August 2026 for Winter - to allow time for immigration processing. Late applications are considered if space remains, and Concordia does not publish a separate application-opening date. Graduate programs, including the Executive MBA, set their own per-program deadlines rather than following this university-wide undergraduate date. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
