Program details

Overview

Translation combines French and English language coursework with translation practice, linguistics and literature, offered in two streams: French-to-English for students whose dominant language is English, and English-to-French for students whose dominant language is French, with room for personalized translation projects based on individual interests. Students may pursue a 72-credit Specialization or a 48-credit Major, and an optional co-op stream places students in the translation industry. Full-time study takes a minimum of three to four years (90-120 credits), with classes held on the Sir George Williams campus in Montreal and admission in the Fall or Winter term. The program is officially recognized by the Canadian Association of Schools of Translation and leads toward certification eligibility with Quebec's OTTIAQ.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: For the Specialization, Quebec CEGEP applicants need a 25 overall average; for the Major, a DEC is sufficient. High-school applicants need a B- average for the Specialization or C+ for the Major. All applicants must also complete two CEGEP courses or equivalent in the target language and pass placement tests in both English and French; the Specialization has limited enrollment. Concordia's institution-wide English proficiency minimum applies unless exempt: IELTS Academic 6.0 with no band below 5.5, TOEFL iBT 70, or Duolingo 105. Fall applications are due March 1 (February 1 for U.S./international) and Winter applications November 1 (August 1 for U.S./international).
