Program details

Overview

This undergraduate program trains professional jazz performers, covering composition, interpretation, and improvisation across jazz styles from the 1940s to the 1970s as well as contemporary and fusion idioms, with emphasis on blues, standards, and bebop. Students choose a vocal (chant jazz) or instrumental (instrument jazz) specialization. The credential is a Baccalaureat en musique (concentration: Interpretation jazz), a 90-credit, full-time program completed over three years at the Montreal campus, with a single annual intake in the Fall term. Admission is based primarily on an instrumental or vocal jazz audition, described by the university as the most important selection criterion, together with a curriculum vitae, transcripts, and a jazz profile form. Applicants specify their instrument or voice type and preferred professor as part of the application process. Graduates pursue performance careers or further study at the graduate level.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission is based primarily on a jazz audition (instrumental or vocal), which the university states is the most important criterion for candidate selection. Applicants also submit a curriculum vitae, academic transcripts, and a jazz profile form describing their musical background. All applicants must demonstrate French proficiency, met by passing Quebec's Epreuve uniforme de francais, holding a recognized French diploma, or achieving a minimum B2 level in listening and reading comprehension on an approved test taken within 24 months of enrolment. Candidates must specify their instrument or voice and preferred professor, and pay audition fees, within ten business days of submitting the online application. The application deadline for Fall 2027 entry is January 15, 2027.
