This undergraduate program trains classical instrumentalists, on piano, strings, or other orchestral instruments, through instrument-specific study combined with ensemble practice, music history, theory, and analysis. It develops performers attentive to the character and historical context of the works they interpret. The credential is a Baccalaureat en musique (concentration: Interpretation instruments classiques), a 90-credit, full-time program completed over three years at the Montreal campus, with a single annual intake in the Fall term. Admission is based mainly on a classical instrumental audition from a designated repertoire, together with a background letter and placement tests in solfege, theory, dictation, and analysis. Applicants specify their instrument and preferred professor as part of the application. Graduates pursue careers as concert soloists, chamber musicians, orchestral performers, or accompanists; further study at the master's, DESS, DEPA, or doctoral level is common for those pursuing competitive professional performance careers.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission is based primarily on a classical instrumental audition from a designated repertoire; the university states the excellence of the instrumental audition is the most important criterion for candidate selection. Candidates also submit a cover letter in French (maximum two pages) describing prior training and professional objectives, and complete placement tests in solfege, theory, dictation, and analysis. Applicants must demonstrate French proficiency, met by completion of Quebec's uniform French exam, at least 60 university credits completed in French, or an approved French test at a minimum B2 level in listening and reading comprehension taken within 24 months of enrolment. A non-refundable audition fee of at least $53.50 CAD applies, charged once per student for the duration of the program. The application deadline for Fall 2027 entry is January 15, 2027.
