Overview
This course is designed to introduce the student to the legal system in Canada. Students are introduced to the structure of the Canadian government and systems of law in Canada. An overview of the sources and division of laws set the stage for an examination of the Constitution and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Moving forward in the course, students will have the opportunity to develop a basic understanding of property law, business law, and consumer law. This course will assist learners in developing a general understanding of how laws are created, defined, implemented and interpreted while also building an understanding of legal terminology. This course is foundational and intended for learners to build upon as they continue their studies in core legal areas.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Post-credential graduate certificate. Entry requires one of: a college diploma in a law-related field with at least a B average or 3.0 cumulative GPA; a university degree at the same standard; an equivalent qualification judged acceptable by the college; or a combination of relevant education and work experience the college judges equivalent. Applicants using the last two routes may be asked for a resume and cover letter documenting their experience. English at degree and graduate-certificate level: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band under 6.0, TOEFL iBT 5 overall with no band under 4.5, PTE Academic 58 with no band under 50, CAEL 70 with 60 per band, Duolingo 120 with no sub-score under 105, Cambridge English 176, LanguageCert Academic 70. Selection where applicants exceed seats: preference for Ontario permanent residents, application received by 1 February, then achievement in the requirements. Fanshawe recommends strong computer literacy and keyboarding at around 40 wpm. A clear police check (CRC or CRJMC) obtained in level two may be required to complete the field placement.

International applicants apply directly to Fanshawe (CAD 100 fee) and have no single published cut-off date; instead, proof of study-permit approval is due 9 December 2026 for a January 2027 start and 5 April 2027 for a May 2027 start, with all admission conditions cleared by 15 December 2026 and 15 April 2027 respectively.
