Overview
This one-year certificate program teaches students to apply concepts from math, engineering, and design to the construction of solid building structures. Coursework covers reading blueprints, building layout, framing systems, interior and exterior finishing, construction materials, and occupational health and safety. Training combines classroom instruction with practical shop work, and as a hands-on centrepiece of the program, students collaboratively build a three-bedroom residential home under instructor guidance over the course of the year. Safety certifications, including First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, and fall protection, are built into the curriculum. The program is based at Holland College's Summerside Waterfront Campus, which includes a dedicated carpentry compound for shop-based training. Admission requires a Grade 12 credential or equivalent with general-level credits, and the program accepts mature students as well as applicants whose first language is not English, subject to language verification. Graduates accumulate 30 apprenticeship hours per week of training toward Red Seal certification in carpentry and can pursue employment with building contractors, self-employment, or work with construction supply yards. Admission Requirements: The Carpentry page states no academic prerequisites beyond Holland College's general full-time admission rule (per the program page and hollandcollege.com's admission-requirements page): Grade 12 or equivalent with credits at or above the general level, plus a resume covering work, volunteer and extracurricular experience. A high school transcript and resume are required from every applicant, with a post-secondary transcript added where relevant; academic upgrading, including GED-equivalency (CAEC) preparation, is available for missing credits, and mature-student applications are accepted. English is the language of instruction: applicants whose first language is not English demonstrate proficiency with IELTS Academic 6.5 (no band below 6), TOEFL iBT 85, CAEL 60 (minimum 50 per band), PTE Academic 60, Duolingo English Test 120 (no section under 115) or Cambridge B2 First/C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176 (no band below 169), among other accepted tests; graduates of a Canadian high school who completed English 621 in P.E.I. (or its provincial equivalent) with at least 70%, or applicants with three consecutive years of full-time English-medium post-secondary study completed within two years of the program start, are exempt. The program takes a September intake at the Summerside Waterfront Campus.

For the Fall 2027 intake, application review begins October 15, 2026 for early consideration, the competitive-program review date is February 28, 2027, and the first round of acceptance offers is sent by the end of March 2027; after February 28 later applications are still assessed as seats remain available right up to the program start date. International applicants use the same MyDashboard process and Holland College publishes no separate, fixed international closing date beyond these general review dates.
