Program details
Overview
Geoarchaeology at Lakehead University is a three-year Bachelor of Science run jointly by the departments of Anthropology, Geography, and Geology, with a four-year Honours Bachelor of Science also offered. The program applies concepts and methods from these fields to interpret artifacts left behind by ancient societies, covering archaeological site formation, physical and natural science, ancient cultures, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and human evolution. Students train hands-on to analyze their own samples and generate data, using specialized facilities including the Environmental Archaeology & Paleoecology Laboratory, Physical Anthropology Laboratory, and Zooarchaeology Laboratory. Optional field schools in Northwestern Ontario or Europe run six weeks and cover laboratory analysis, material culture identification, archaeological excavation techniques, and field data recording. The program is delivered on campus at the Thunder Bay campus.
