Program details
Overview
The Classical Studies Associate of Arts Degree is a two-year, university-transferable programme that examines ancient Greek and Roman civilizations through an interdisciplinary combination of historical, archaeological, and literary sources. Coursework situates these cultures within their wider Mediterranean context and examines their lasting influence, including how classical ideas have been used to justify inequality. Students develop research and critical-thinking skills through courses in classics, ancient history, and related humanities disciplines. The credential is designed for transfer into a bachelor's degree and provides a foundation for further study or careers in fields such as teaching, law, publishing, and business. Langara is described as the only two-year college in Canada offering a Classical Studies programme. Courses are offered on a full-time or part-time basis, with intakes in January, May, and September. As of the Fall 2025 semester, new applications to the Associate of Arts Degree stream have been suspended; the related Classical Studies Diploma remains open to new applicants.
