Latin American and Caribbean Studies is an interdisciplinary program examining the peoples, cultures, history, literature, politics, economy and geography of Latin America and the Caribbean. Students develop a broad understanding of the region along with the language and research skills needed for advanced scholarship, engaging with coursework on regional culture and media across different periods and on the history and politics of the region. The curriculum can be complemented with courses in anthropology, economics, geography and Hispanic studies, allowing students to focus on particular disciplines while building insight into the region. The program is offered by the Faculty of Arts, with applicants admitted directly to that faculty, and leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants apply directly to the Faculty of Arts. The only stated academic prerequisite is Grade 12 (or equivalent senior secondary) English or French matching the language of instruction. McGill's requirements vary by educational background (Quebec CEGEP, Ontario, other Canadian provinces, U.S. or international curricula); grades equal to or above published minimums do not guarantee admission, and the review considers the complete academic record. English proficiency (e.g. IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 90) is required unless the applicant is exempt.
