Program details

Overview

Microbiology & Molecular Biotechnology combines pure and applied microbiology, the study of bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa and parasites, with molecular biotechnology, which develops solutions to biological and health problems. Students build expertise across environmental microbiology, molecular genetics, microbial pathogenesis, cellular and molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics and biotechnology. Coursework includes Experiments in Biotechnology, Microbial Ecology, Environmental Microbiology and Fundamental Parasitology. The specialization must be taken with a major in the Bachelor of Science (Agricultural and Environmental Sciences), with Life Sciences (Biological and Agricultural) recommended, and is offered by the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Related majors include Life Sciences (Biological and Agricultural), Biology, Microbiology and Immunology, and Biochemistry. Graduates pursue careers such as health scientist, biotechnologist, pharmaceutical researcher, plant and agricultural biotechnologist, or forensic scientist, building on a grounding in biology, genetics, biochemistry and molecular biology.
