Overview

The Pharmacology program is a 67-credit Bachelor of Science major offered by the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics in the Faculty of Science. It combines core pharmacology courses with related biomedical sciences, building a foundation in the physical and chemical basis of cell function, genetics, and organic chemistry alongside introductory pharmacology and mammalian physiology in the first required year. In the second required year, students take metabolic biochemistry, a cell and molecular biology laboratory course, and pharmacology courses covering drug action, the role of drugs in disease treatment, and principles of toxicology, supplemented by complementary courses. The major is intended to give students a grounding suitable for employment in pharmacology-related fields or for entry into graduate or professional training programs such as medicine, dentistry, or graduate research. Students admitted to the program are expected to meet regularly with the Student Affairs Coordinator to verify their course selections and progress toward degree completion. As with all Faculty of Science majors, students must satisfy both this program's specific course requirements and the broader Bachelor of Science degree requirements, including the Foundation program, to graduate. The program suits students planning careers or further study in pharmacology, toxicology, drug development, or biomedical research.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The Pharmacology Major page states no admission criteria of its own; it only lists the courses making up the 67-credit programme and directs incoming students to consult the Student Affairs Coordinator. Entry is decided at the Bachelor of Science level through McGill's central Admissions Office rather than by the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Quebec CEGEP graduates are admitted directly with the relevant science prerequisites on their Diploma of Collegial Studies; applicants from other Canadian provinces are assessed on their senior secondary record (Ontario applicants on the average of their 'Top 6' 4U/4M courses); international applicants are assessed by their own educational system and are normally admitted with an additional Freshman year. Meeting the published minimum grades does not guarantee admission. English proficiency is required unless exempt: IELTS Academic 6.5 with no component below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 90, Duolingo 125, or PTE Academic 65.

Application Details

Start Date: September
Application Deadline: McGill sets deadlines by educational background rather than citizenship. For entry in September 2027, Quebec CEGEP and Quebec high-school applicants must apply by 1 March 2027 (documents due 15 April 2027); applicants from Ontario and other Canadian provinces must apply by 1 February 2027 (documents due 4 May 2027). International applicants, including those on a U.S. high-school or IB curriculum, must apply by 15 January 2027 (documents due 1 March 2027). The application portal opens 1 October 2026. Deadlines are firm and late applications are not accepted; admission is not rolling, and decisions are released competitively from November through July depending on school system. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
