Plant Biology covers the nature of plants, from cellular structure to their role as primary producers in the ecosystem. The specialization examines plant structure and development, physiology and biochemistry, including photosynthesis and the chemical compounds plants produce for defence against herbivores, pests and pathogens. Students develop practical skills in plant identification, propagation and molecular methods for studying plants and fungi. Most courses include laboratory components, using facilities such as the Morgan Arboretum, McGill Herbarium, Lods Centre, the Horticultural Centre and the Plant Science greenhouses, and students may undertake a research project with a member of the Plant Science Department. Courses include Plant Structure and Function, Flowering Plant Diversity, Plant Ecophysiology and Plant Pathology. This specialization is offered within the Bachelor of Science (Agricultural and Environmental Sciences) and must be combined with a major, most commonly Environmental Biology or Life Sciences (Biological & Agricultural). Career paths include field biologist, research technician, environmental biologist, botanist, and roles in horticulture or botanical gardens.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants apply to the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, offered on the Macdonald campus. Prerequisites are Grade 12 (or equivalent senior secondary) English or French matching the language of instruction, Grade 12 mathematics (precalculus or calculus), and two of Grade 12 Biology, Chemistry or Physics. McGill's requirements vary by educational background (Quebec CEGEP, Ontario, other Canadian provinces, U.S. or international curricula); presenting grades equal to or above published minimums does not guarantee admission, and applications are reviewed against the complete academic record. English proficiency (e.g. IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 90) is required unless the applicant is exempt.
