The PhD in Islamic Studies at McGill University, offered by the Institute of Islamic Studies in the Faculty of Arts, is a research-intensive program covering areas such as Arabic, Persian, Urdu, and Turkish studies, Islamic theology and philosophy, the anthropology of Islam, and Islam and politics. The program can also be taken as a Gender and Women's Studies option, in which the doctoral thesis must centrally relate to issues of gender or women's studies. Students may take courses in Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and Urdu, and benefit from a low student-faculty ratio and regular guest lectures from prominent scholars in the field. The Institute houses the Islamic Studies Library, among the largest North American collections in the field, and has placed graduates in academic positions at institutions including Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. Admission is through the Fall intake only.
