The Doctor of Philosophy in Music is offered by the Schulich School of Music, across seven topic areas: Musicology, Music Theory, Music Technology, Music Education, Sound Recording, Composition, and Applied Performance Sciences. An Interdisciplinary option lets students combine methods and research questions from separate areas within the School, choosing a primary and secondary field of study. A Gender and Women's Studies option is also available, offered with the McGill Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies, focusing on gender, sexuality, feminist theory, and women's studies. Facilities include several performance spaces, research and production laboratories, two libraries with extensive music resources, and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT), with six dedicated research labs and work spaces. The program develops literature review, original thinking, and knowledge synthesis skills for careers in academia or industry, and admits students for the Fall term only.
