Overview
Music Performance: Early Music (Instruments) is a Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.) program at McGill University's Schulich School of Music, focused on historical performance practice on early instruments, including Baroque violin, Baroque guitar, viola, cello, viola da gamba, flute, recorder, oboe, early brass instruments, lutes, theorbo, plucked strings, and historical keyboards. The program combines individual instrumental lessons with ensemble training and study of historical performance approaches through workshops, masterclasses, guest lectures, and research projects. Students have access to McGill's collection of early and historical-copy instruments dating from the 15th to early 19th century, including organs, sackbuts, cornetti, period flutes, oboes, clarinets, horns, bassoons, viols, and baroque string instruments. Training prepares graduates for performance careers in early music ensembles and further study in historical performance practice. Admission is through the Schulich School of Music.

Admission Requirements: Applicants apply through the Schulich School of Music for the Bachelor of Music. Admission is based on the applicant's academic record for their educational background, a live or recorded audition (repertoire and format vary by instrument), and available places in the program; entrance is competitive. International applicants must also submit proof of English proficiency (IELTS Academic 6.5 with no component below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 90, Duolingo English Test 125, PTE Academic 65, or CAEL 70) unless exempt.
