Music Performance: Piano is offered by the Schulich School of Music and trains students in the aspects of a professional performance career, with a focus on the solo repertoire required for undergraduate performance exams. Coursework covers piano techniques, concerto repertoire, piano pedagogy, and repertoire studies, alongside music theory, history, musicianship, and professional training. Performance opportunities include weekly studio recitals, student soloist concerts, studio classes, annual concerto competitions, and visiting master classes. The program can be complemented with minors such as Musical Applications of Technology, Musical Science and Technology, Music Education, Music Entrepreneurship, or Music Conducting, and relates to majors including Music Theory, Music Performance: Voice, Music Performance: Organ or Guitar, and Music Composition. Graduates pursue careers as performers, songwriters, music theorists, music journalists, and producers, while some combine performance with other music-related work.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The Schulich School of Music runs its own admissions process, separate from McGill's central undergraduate application review, and does not use the Quebec Cote R (R-Score) for its decisions. Quebec CEGEP applicants to a performance program need a diploma of collegial studies with an overall CEGEP average of at least 75%; any offer of admission is conditional on successful graduation and final grades. Every applicant plays an instrument or voice and completes a live or recorded audition, and a program place also depends on availability for that instrument in a given year. Required supporting documents are a one-page Statement of Intent, a one-to-three-page music resume, academic transcripts (or a permanent code for CEGEP applicants), audition recordings if not auditioning live, and proof of English proficiency for applicants schooled outside North America. Admission decisions rest on the audition, academic record and these supporting materials together, and cannot be appealed.
