The Concurrent Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Education program combines a Bachelor of Music, with a major in Music Education, and a Bachelor of Education (Elementary and Secondary), offered jointly by the Schulich School of Music and the Faculty of Education at McGill University. Students complete academic studies in music alongside professional studies in education, including hands-on student-teaching field placements in schools. Coursework spans music theory, history, and performance together with pedagogy, covering subjects such as Western musical traditions, vocal techniques, and issues in music education. Graduates are prepared for careers such as elementary or secondary school music teacher, private music instructor, community arts and culture program officer, and education policy researcher. Applicants must meet the admission requirements of both the Faculty of Education and the Schulich School of Music. Students who already hold a Bachelor of Music degree may apply directly to the Bachelor of Education in Music component.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The Schulich School of Music runs its own admissions process, separate from McGill's central undergraduate application review, and does not use the Quebec Cote R (R-Score) for its decisions. Quebec CEGEP applicants to Music Education, classed as a music research program, need a diploma of collegial studies with an overall CEGEP average of at least 80%; any offer of admission is conditional on successful graduation and final grades. Every applicant plays an instrument or voice and completes a live or recorded audition, with a program place also depending on availability. Required supporting documents are a one-page Statement of Intent, a one-to-three-page music resume, academic transcripts (or a permanent code for CEGEP applicants), audition recordings if not auditioning live, and proof of English proficiency where applicable. Music Education applicants must additionally arrange two reference letters, submitted directly to McGill by each referee.
