Overview
Settlement Studies is a diploma program at NorQuest College that prepares students to support newcomers to Canada, including immigrants and refugees. Coursework covers Canadian immigration pathways and refugee resettlement systems, trauma-informed and anti-racist practice, intercultural communication, client-centred case management, crisis response, and professional ethics and boundaries. Students learn to assess client needs, connect newcomers with community and public services, and advocate alongside them within settlement organizations. The program runs five terms and includes two field placements totalling 400 hours of supervised practice. It is delivered in person with a HyFlex option at NorQuest's Edmonton campus and graduates are eligible for a post-graduate work permit. The program is not currently open to international students.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must meet one of the following Language Arts requirements: 60% in English Language Arts 30-1, 60% in English Language Arts 30-2, 60% in ESLG 1860, or 60% in ESLG 1898, or complete a free academic assessment. Applicants whose first language is not English must also provide proof of English proficiency (results no more than two years old) through an approved test, or through 50% in ESLG 1898 and ESLG 1899, or 50% in ESLG 1860 and ESLG 1861. A clear Police Information Check (Vulnerable Sector Check if over 18) is required before field placement.
