Overview
This diploma program at NorQuest College prepares students for front-line social work practice. The curriculum covers social work foundations and theory, the helping process, social policy, assessment and interviewing skills, and models of practice for working with individuals, groups, families, and communities, along with coursework on mental health, and abuse, violence, and addictions. It runs over six terms across two years and includes 700 hours of work experience gained through two practicum placements. The program is based at the Edmonton campus. Requirements
Admission Requirements: Direct entry requires English Language Arts 30-1 at 60%, 30-2 at 70%, or ESLG 1860 at 60%, with equivalencies available for a missing subject. Non-native English speakers must submit proof no more than two years old: IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6, TOEFL iBT 84 with no section below 21, Cambridge English 180 with no section below 165, CAEL 70, PTE Academic 59 with no section below 56, Duolingo 115, or CLBA/CLBPA with no section below 8, plus ILAC Pathway 3.3 or ILSC Advanced 1. Applicants must also complete 100 voluntary or paid hours in the human services field within the five years before starting, all with one organisation involving direct contact with disadvantaged or marginalised clients in a health, human-services or social-services setting (daycare, babysitting, fundraising, school co-op and administrative work do not qualify), backed by a supervisor reference form. Before the full-time May-to-August practicum, applicants who are 18 or older need a clear Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check and an Intervention Record Check, dated within six months and submitted 45 days ahead. The programme is not currently open to international students.
