The Roofer apprenticeship trains students to prepare and apply protective coverings to roofs on all types of buildings, working with materials including shingles, shakes, metal flashings, tiles, modified plastics and elastomeric or asphaltic compositions, and waterproofing concrete and masonry above and below ground level. NAIT has delivered the program since the 1970s; technical instruction is delivered on campus in workshops designed to recreate real-world working conditions. Coursework covers reading blueprints and shop drawings, applying and repairing shingles, concrete tiles and PVC membranes, using math to calculate areas and roof pitch and estimate materials, applying waterproof coatings to concrete, safely setting up and using scaffolding, and estimating material and installation costs. On completion, apprentices receive a Journeyperson Certificate and a Certificate from Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT).
