Overview
This course will introduce students to the proper techniques for the collection of blood and body fluid specimens. Students will be introduced to the processing of specimens for the various tests and the importance of storage to ensure valid test results. Students will be introduced and utilize standard precautions in handling biological specimens. This course will provide students with opportunities to perform ECGs and set up Holter monitors. An exciting aspect of this course is the focus on the theoretical knowledge and skills needed to interact with patients in the collection of specimens. Legal and ethical issues pertaining to specimen collection and processing will be explored and discussed. Students will be able to begin competency in data entry and laboratory information systems.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Domestic applicants need an Ontario Secondary School Diploma with Grade 12 English (C or U), Grade 11 Math (C, M, or U), and Grade 11 or 12 Biology and Chemistry (C or U), or equivalent; Northern College's two-semester Pre-Health Sciences program can also satisfy these prerequisites, and missing courses can be completed free of charge through Academic Upgrading. International applicants need a senior high school diploma with at least 50% in the Math, Chemistry, and Biology equivalents, and must meet the English-proficiency requirement of IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 88, or PTE Academic 60. Before the Semester 3 clinical placement, students need CPR (Basic Cardiac Life Support) and Standard First Aid certification, a physician's medical report, Hepatitis B and two-step Mantoux immunization records, a criminal record check, and mask-fit capability, which requires a clean-shaven face.
