The Chemistry program at Ontario Tech University leads to a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree and covers the major fields of chemistry: physical, analytical, organic, inorganic and chemical biology. Students use modern laboratory facilities and equipment to gain experiential learning, working on challenges such as new materials for energy storage, drug discovery and the development of renewable energy and fuel cells. Internships and co-op placements are available through faculty-established industry partnerships. Students can pursue specializations in Chemical Biology, which focuses on chemistry applied to biological problems, or Pharmaceutical Chemistry, which focuses on the design, development and evaluation of medications. A direct-entry co-op option lets students apply for paid work terms directly through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC code DCY), while the standard program uses OUAC code DSY. Students may also extend into the five-year Bachelor of Science and Management (Honours) program, combining chemistry study with a foundation in business and management.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Current Ontario secondary school students must complete the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six 4U or 4M credits, including English (ENG4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U), and two of Biology (SBI4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), Chemistry (SCH4U) or Physics (SPH4U). A combined minimum 70 per cent average in prerequisite math and science courses is required; it is recommended that all four of MCV4U, SBI4U, SCH4U and SPH4U be taken. Admission is competitive and the specific average required varies from year to year; students are selected based on school marks, distribution of subjects taken and performance in subjects relevant to the program. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Last year's cut-off was 70 per cent, with an expected cut-off in the low 70s.
