This program leads to a Bachelor of Health Science (Honours) in Medical Laboratory Science over four years, delivered in-class at the North Oshawa campus, and is accredited by Equal TM Canada. The curriculum builds foundational knowledge in biological, physical and health sciences before covering five laboratory disciplines: biochemistry, hematology, histotechnology, microbiology and transfusion science. Graduates are eligible to write the Canadian Alliance for Medical Laboratory Professional Regulators (CAMLPR) Fields-of-Practice certification examinations in Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Transfusion Medicine, Clinical Microbiology and Histology, and to seek registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario after meeting its additional requirements, including a criminal record check. Students begin hands-on work in simulation laboratories in first year, and complete an undergraduate thesis or research study. In the final year, after completing all coursework, students undertake a 25-week clinical placement at an approved diagnostic medical laboratory, supervised by a registered medical laboratory technologist; placement location is not guaranteed and students cover their own placement costs. It suits students aiming at careers such as medical laboratory technologist, biological technologist, or health information management technician.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Current Ontario secondary school students must complete the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six 4U or 4M credits, including English (ENG4U) with a minimum grade of 60 per cent, Biology (SBI4U), Chemistry (SCH4U), and one of Advanced Functions (MHF4U) or Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), plus a combined minimum 70 per cent average across the prerequisite math and science courses. Students eligible for transfer credit still complete the program in four years due to its structure. Admission is competitive: last year's cut-off was 83 per cent and the expected cut-off sits in the low 80s, so meeting the minimums does not guarantee a seat. Applicants whose first language is not English must present, within two years of the intake, IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, Duolingo English Test 120, PTE Academic 58, CAEL 70 with no band below 60, Cambridge English Advanced 180 with no band below 170, or Oxford ELLT 7, per the university's general admission requirements. The program begins each September.
